This concept holds true when you maneuver forces no matter what size organization you are dealing with. All tactical movements from a two person team to a much larger organization always has one element providing overwatch security for the element that is moving. If you have a two individual team, one person will scan the area in front of the person moving to ensure the person moving is not surprised or fired upon. In a situation where a team is in contact and receiving enemy fire, the person in overwatch is responsible for providing suppressive fire to keep the aggressor from placing effective fire on the individual moving. From a tactical standpoint this concept holds true for buddy teams, Fire Teams, Squads, Platoons, Battalion and higher echelons. This simple concept of operating with two elements that support each other is no different than two individuals looking out for each other at the mall or planning for a larger tactical operation. In later posts more detailed discussions will focus on the maneuver of two mutually supporting elements called a support element and a assault element.
