A must at your hunting cabin or any retreat is a quality set of cast iron cookware. An all encompassing set is Lodge's 5-piece Cast Iron Cook Set which includes the following: 10.5-inch round griddle, 8-inch skillet, 10.25-inch skillet, 5qt Dutch Oven and 10.25-inch iron cover. For cooking over campfires there is not a better cookware alternative when preparing foods in large quantities. Dutch ovens allow anyone to efficiently cook stews, chili's or breakfast dishes quickly.
An effective way to identify group members at night is to use Infrared (IR) patches as a signaling system. The patch's velcro backing allows them to be secured to hats and uniforms in a variety of different positions, allowing units to identify friendly forces. IR illuminators are used to light-up the bright signature of these patches. For instructional purposes you can use your video camera's night shot function to show how IR patches can be used for signaling, for marking entry points to buildings, for reference points or for equipment marking. Groups must incorporate how IR systems are to be employed in their Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as markers for use during limited visibility. The pictured U.S. Flag or other IR patches are widely available on Amazon.com or Ebay.
For a long term food storage solution purchase Augason Farms 41lb container of Pinto Beans for $68 at Walmart.com with free shipping. As the item's description below illustrates, these beans are an all-natural pinto bean that are gluten-free and a good source of vitamins and fiber, making them a great source of protein. These beans are also an excellent ingredient for any campfire meal. In addition the product's 30 year shelf life makes for a quick store and forget item that normally spoils if not properly packaged.
Operating in the field requires different methods to build moral within a group, which is needed to ensure individuals are motivated and ready to complete tasks. This concept was reinforced this past weekend during a Cub Scout outing where a simple item like warm coffee or hot chocolate can effectively wake people up in the morning and prepare them for the day. To achieve this task, Coffee Boilers are a field expedite method to quickly heat up water in an open fire. Pictured is a comparison of a 2-quart and 3-quart boiler. The smaller 2-quart boiler to the right has the percolator insert that is needed to limit the amount of coffee grounds in your coffee. The 3-quart boiler below does not have this feature. Boilers/kettles are extremely convenient for boiling water for purification and other cooking needs. When packing boilers in your pack, save on space by placing items in the boiler such as food items or breakables prior to packing.
An essential medical kit for outdoor organizations such as Orienteering Groups, Boy Scouts, Range Operations and other outdoor activities where injuries can occur is North American Rescue's Warrior Aid and Litter Kit (WALK). Many leaders rely on outside medical assets to evacuate casualties and fail to realize the importance of having a sturdy litter in an emergency situation. Field expedite litters (such as two poles, t-shirts or a poncho) are fine when the proper equipment is not available, but are not suitable for properly stabilizing and carrying a patient. I urge everyone to spend the extra money to ensure your organization has the correct medical supplies when an injury occurs. The military has addressed such a system with the introduction of the Warrior Aid and Litter Kit by North American Rescue (NAR). There is no substitute for this robust kit that provides the necessary tools for the treatment of multiple trauma patients and immediate evacuation of one patient. NAR's Talon II 81C and 90C quad-fold litters are the center piece of this evacuation system. If you purchase the WALK on the secondary market, such as Ebay, ensure the items below are included in the kit to prevent overpaying. Expect to pay $350-$500 for a used kit, or up to $1700 for a new WALK at North American Rescue's website.
**To assist users in finding medical supplies, I recommend writing on the bag what items are located in each pocket so users are not searching when time is essential.

I recently built out a 100 watt solar system that is easily transportable for those who need to move their panel from their home to another location. I mounted the Renogy 100w system below, using the Pole Mount attached to a 7-foot long 3 inch diameter PVC pipe. To erect the array I installed a 2.5-foot section of 4 inch diameter PVC into the ground using a post hole digger. I installed the ground mount pipes at both locations I plan to use the system at. The nice thing about PVC pipe is that it is lightweight, making it easier to move the panel for storage or to your jump location.
